What is latency?
Latency is the round-trip time between your device sending a request and getting a response back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Most speed tests label this same measurement "ping" — latency and ping are the same thing, just different names for it. A low latency connection feels instant; a high latency connection feels laggy even if downloads are fast, because latency affects responsiveness, not throughput.
Real-life example: two connections can both download a 4K movie at the same speed, but the one with lower latency will feel snappier when you click a link, join a video call, or press a button in an online game — because that first response comes back faster.
What is a good latency?

Latency for cloud gaming
Cloud gaming (GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Remote Play) is far more sensitive to latency than regular online gaming, because every button press has to travel to a remote server and the video has to stream back before you see it happen. Most cloud gaming services recommend under 40-60 ms of latency to feel responsive — tighter than the ~50-100 ms that's often fine for a normal online match. If a cloud-gaming session feels delayed even though your download speed looks fast, latency (not bandwidth) is almost always the reason.
What causes high latency?
- Distance to the server: the physical distance data has to travel is the single biggest factor — testing against a nearby server almost always shows lower latency than a distant one.
- Wi-Fi instead of Ethernet: wireless adds retries and processing overhead that a wired connection avoids.
- Network congestion: heavy simultaneous usage (streaming, large uploads, other devices) can queue your traffic behind other data.
- VPNs and proxies: routing through an extra hop, especially a distant one, adds latency on top of your normal connection.
- Older or overloaded routers: outdated hardware can add processing delay before your traffic even leaves your network.
How to lower your latency
- Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi wherever possible.
- Test against and connect to servers closer to your actual location.
- Close other bandwidth-heavy apps and devices during latency-sensitive activities like gaming or calls.
- Turn off or switch VPN servers to one closer to you, if you use one.
- Restart your router periodically and keep its firmware up to date.
Latency vs. jitter vs. download speed
These three numbers answer different questions:
